In 1940 in the city of Sterlitamak a teaching institute was established, which consisted of two departments: Philological and Physics and Mathematics. During the following years the departments on training of teachers of the Bashkir Language and Literature, Natural Sciences and Geography, and History were formed. Having the status of teaching the Institute existed for 14 years.

Sterlitamak State Pedagogical Institute was organized in 1954 which became the center of scientific-pedagogical thought of the Southern Part of the Republic of Bashkortostan during its existence.

Currently the Institute trains students in 5 Departments: Physical and Mathematical , Philological, Technology and Economics, Historical, and Elementary School Teaching. At these departments students can obtain 20 different specialities, such as Mathematics, Physics, Philology, Technology and Entrepreneurship, Pre-School Pedagogy and Psychology and Methods of Elementary Education and others.

In 1995 approximately 4,500 students studied, among them 1,600 part-time students. All in all during the years of its existence the Institute trained more than 20,000 specialists. Today 28 departments employ 281 teachers, 42% of them have scientific degrees among them there are 4 Professors and Doctors of Sciences, 113 Candidates of Sciences and Associate Professors. Teachers' qualification is constantly improving: during the last 5 years 6 Doctor's and 51 Candidate's dissertations were defended, 72 people were enrolled into the : graduate school which has also been existing at the Institute for the second year. Everything mentioned above creates provisions for solution of the main objective of the Institute preparation of a modern teacher, with creative way of thinking, competitive and able to work in the conditions of a market economy. For solution of this purpose it is important to have the appropriate material basis. To day the Institute has a lot of study rooms and laboratory buildings, equipped with modern facilities, devices, computers, a library with the book fund of more than 400,000 volumes, and reading halls. Besides, computing laboratory, scientific research sector, printing shop and printing house were created for the development of science and teaching process.

Scientific-methodical work of the faculty staff is connected with the improvement of teaching process, is aimed at the development of education. The textbooks, written by the faculty of the Institute are recommended as the standard textbooks for the schools of the Republic. These are the books: «Bashkir National Upbrining», «Native Word» (the textbook on the Bashkir Language and Literature for the 7-8 grades of the Bashkir Schools), «Morphology of Modern Russian Literature», «Descriptive Geometry», «Rational Usage of the Nature of Bashkortostan».

More than 85% of the students take an active part in the scientific research work, part of the students' papers is published and awarded with the diplomas and medals of the all-Russian level. Students also take part in educational and archeological expeditions, in museum, archive, field, and folklore practices.

At the Institute functions the Department of Additional Pedagogical Professions, including 18 Chairs. This Department gives students theoretical knowledge and practical skills for the leadership of the groups of artistic creative work. Here function the departments of folk and stage dances, chorus and vocal singing, folk instuments, speech therapy, sports and so on.

The Institute has all conditions for supporting students health. There were built several open sport facilities and a stadium, in the study building there are sheltered gyms. A sanatorium is opened, where qualified doctors work and which is equipped with up-to-date medical facilities.

More than 1,400 students live in three well-designed dormitories, young student families are provided with places to live.
