Birsk State Pedagogical Institute was established in 1952 on the basis of three departments of the teaching institute, opened in Birsk since 1939. During the period of its existence the Institute trained more than 20,000 of teachers for the schools of the country, mainly for rural areas.

Now the Institute has 6 departments, where approximately 3,500 students study at full-time and part-time departments in 16 specialities. They study at the following faculties:

• Philology (specialities: Russian and Literature, Russian and Literature in National Schools, Philologist in the Conditions of Russian-Bashkir Bilingualism);
• Foreign Languages (specialities: English and German/French Languages, French and German/English Languages, Teacher of the English Language, History, Literature, the Culture of Bashkortostan);
• Preschool Pedagogy and Psychology, Psychology, Pedagogy and Methods of Preschool Education);
• Pedagogy and Methods of Elementary Education.

The faculty consists of experienced, and creatively working people. All in all there are 225 teachers at the Institute, among them 5 Doctors of Sciences and 85 Candidates of Sciences, i.e. 40% of them have scientific degrees.

At the Institute a graduate school functions, where in two scpecialities study 18 graduate students of full-time and part-time departments.

The library of the Institute has holdings of 350,000 volumes, 2 reading halls for 130 students.

Different forms of collaboration with the bodies of national education are being worked out at the Institiute: since 1995-96 academic year on the basis of Birsk State Pedagogical Institute functions the branch of Bashkir Institute of Qualification Development for the Educational Staff, which carries out the retraining of qualification of pedagogical staff. Since the same year there works the problem lab oratory on mathematical modeling and numerical solution of imporper given problems.

In BSPI function 3 Scientific Research Institutes of the regional problems of education. The staff of the Institute has a progress in the training of teaching staff for rural secondary and professional schools.

In general students study in each department more than 500 general and specialized subjects. All departments moved to new state standarts, in the light of which there's being carried out a work on moving some specialities to the multilevel system of specialists' training.

The Institute has a good material-technical basis: 5 study buildings, two of them for 2,300 students were built during the last years. A computer laboratory, 5 computing classes for the students and one computing class for the faculty were organized to conduct the classes on up-to-date level. To provide good life conditions for the students 5 well-equipped buildings of the dormitories were built, each of them has recreation rooms and reading halls.

Different units exist at the Institute for the comprehensive development of the students: Museum of Bashkir writer Kh. Davletshina, laureate of the Prize named after Salavat Yulayev; Art Gallery with the fund of 120 paintings; zoological museum, arboretum, where there are represented approximately 1,000 kinds of plants from the whole world; agrobiostation; 2 gyms. During the college years students can obtain an extra specialization at the Department of Additional Pedagogical Professions.

The Institute has the sport camp «Druzhba» which is located in one of the most ecologically clean places of Bashkortostan, at the bank of the lake Uset’ near the Belaya river.
