In Bashkir State University research is carried out within 4 scientific fields: natural, technical, social and humanist sciences, - and within 18 scientific branches (in accordance with the nomenclature of scientific specialities approved by Russian Ministry of Industry and Science Decree № 47 from January 31, 2001).
Scientific research is carried out within 24 scientific areas corresponding to Russian Federation Science and Technology Priority Development Areas and Russian Federation List of Critical Technologies approved by the President of the Russian Federation (the names are given in accordance with the Higher Attestation Committee list of classification headings):

In the university there are 15 authoritative scientific and teaching teams (schools) headed by renowned scientists of worldwide reputation and working within the following scientific and teaching areas:
 
1. Physics of reduced dimension atomic structures
 
Founder – R.Z. Bakhtizin, Honoured Science Worker of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Winner of the State Science and Technology Prize of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Honoured Worker of the Higher School of the Russian Federation, Soros Professor.
Fields of research – Atomic-scale research of solid-state quantum nanostructures.
 
2. Applied geothermics
 
Founder – Candidate of Geology and Mineralogy, Associate Professor I.L. Dvorkin (1929-1987).
Currently the school is headed by R.A. Valiullin, corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Professor, Head of the Department of Geophysics, I.M. Gubkin Prize Winner.
Fields of research – Theoretical and experimental research of thermohydrodynamic fields in oil reservoirs and wells under the conditions of anisothermic polyphase filtration.
 
3. Electromagnetic thermohydrodynamics of media
 
Founder – F.L. Sayakhov (1934-2002), Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor, member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Honoured Science Worker of the Republic of Bashkortostan, High Achiever of the USSR Higher School.
Currently the school is headed by L.A. Kovaleva, Head of the Department of Applied Physics, Professor, awarded Peter I Medal of Honour for Service in Reviving Russian Science and Economy by the International Academy of Natural and Social Sciences, and a commemorative medal of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences for a scientific discovery.
Fields of research:
  • processes of heat-and-mass transfer in polyphase media affected by electromagnetic radiation;
  • experimental research of dielectric properties of various oil and gas objects, high frequency – dielectrometric methods of controlling and governing properties of process liquids in oil production;
  • research of thermohydrodynamic processes in emulsion systems affected by high-power electromagnetic fields;
  • theoretical and experimental research of the interaction of gas-hydrate systems and an electromagnetic field;
  • use of high-power HF and SHF electromagnetic fields in technological processes of oil production, preparation and transporting.
 
4. Mechanics of continuous media: chaotic fluctuations and nonlinear waves in vesicular systems; nonlinear dynamics of hydroelastic systems
 
Founder – M.A. Ilgamov, Professor, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Winner of the Science and Technology Prize of the Government of the Republic of Bashkortostan, awarded Badge of Honour and Friendship Orders.
Fields of research – liquid and gas mechanics, solid deformed body mechanics.
 
5. Fundamental research of mathematical simulation of complex chemical reactions.
 
Founder – S.I. Spivak, Head of the Mathematical Simulation Department, Professor.
Field of research – research of kinetics and thermodynamics of mechanisms of complex chemical reactions.
 
6. Fundamental research of the mechanism of organic compounds liquid-phase oxidation with the aim of creating new materials
 
Founders– Professor Ye.T. Denisov, member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Yu.B. Monakov, Winner of the Science and Technology Prize of the Government of the Russian Federation.
Field of research – research of kinetic regularities and the mechanism of liquid-phase oxidation of organic compounds, including polymers, affected by ecological oxidants.
 
7. Fundamental research of regularities of synthesis and application of multifunctional polymer stabilizers and search for effective methods of polymer modification and stabilization
 
Founder – K.S. Minsker, member of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Professor, Winner of the Science and Technology Prize of the Government of the Russian Federation. Currently the school is headed by S.V. Kolesov, Doctor of Chemistry, Professor, Head of the Department of High-Molecular Compounds and General Chemical Engineering.
Fields of research – studying the regularities of destruction, stabilization and modification of polymers, especially haloid-containing polymers. Developing polymer stabilization methods on the basis of these studies. Developing multifunctional stabilizers and stabilizing systems for haloid-containing polymers.
 
8. Biodiversity maintenance problem, biodiversity contribution to sustainable development
 
Founder – B.M. Mirkin, Professor, Honoured Science Worker of the Russian Federation.
Fields of research – vegetation, phytocenology, plant protection and ecology.
 
9. Fundamental brain activity regularities and applied aspects of brain research
 
Founder – L.B. Kalimullina, Professor, Doctor of Biology, full member of the International Academy of Sciences, member of the International Brain Research Organization, Honoured Science Worker of the Republic of Bashkortostan.
Fields of research – studying fundamental brain activity regularities and applied aspects of brain activity.
 
10. Plant cell and tissue culture
 
Founder – R.R. Akhmetov, Professor, Doctor of Biology
Fields of research:
  • callusing, somatic embryogenesis, cell selection and regeneration of cereal plants;
  • microclonal reproduction and fungal and viral pathogene rehabilitation of woody plants, ornamental bushes and medicinal plants;
  • creating dihaploid series of cultivated plant, plant genetic engineering.
 
11. Germanic and typological linguistics (structural and semantic characteristics of linguistic unit sand their communicative pragmatic functions in the text)
 
Founder – R.Z. Muryasov, Professor, Doctor of Philology, Honoured Science Worker of the republic of Bashkortostan, Honoured Worker of the Higher School of the Russian Federation.
Fields of research – general grammatical problems, comparative historical, topological and contrastive linguistics, intercultural communication and translation problems.
 
12. The Bashkir language and literature in the Eurasian culture system
 
Founder of the school – R.N. Baimov, Doctor of Philology, Professor, corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Honoured Science Worker of the Russian Federation, Head of the Bashkir State University Department of Bashkir Literature and Folklore.

13. Universal values protection problems in criminal court proceedings
