The history of the Department starts in 1961, when the major of Petrophysics was introduced at the Department of General Physics under the guidance of BashNIPIneft Director, Doctor of Technology, Professor G.A. Babalyan. In 1973 a Department of Theoretical Mechanics and Hydromechanics is opened with Doctor of Technology, Professor G.A. Khalikov as its Head. The Department took the responsibility for two majors of the Faculty of Physics – Geophysics and Petrophysics. In 1979 the major of Physical Hydrodynamics was introduced on the basis of the Petrophysics major. In 1998 the Department of Applied Physics is opened (headed by: from 1998 to 2002 – Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor F.L. Sayakhov, since 2002– Doctor of Technology, Professor, Active Member of Russian Academy of Natural Science L.A. Kovalyova) with the major of Physics and Hydrodynamics of Oil and Gas Stratum.
 
Over the years of the existence of the Department its graduates and staff have defended more than 50 candidate and 16 doctoral dissertations. The Department employed Corresponding Members of Academy of Sciences of Republic of Bashkortostan, Members of Russian Academy of Sciences, Professors F.L. Sayakhov and G.A. Khalikov, Professors V.Sh. Shagipov and I.Sh. Akhatov (currently Professor in a US university), Professor, Dean of the Faculty of Physics Z.F. Karimov, I.A. Fakhretdinov (currently Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor, Head of Bashkir State Pedagogical University Department), K.M. Fyodorov (currently Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor, Head of Tyumen State University Departments), Doctor of Physics and Mathematics M.A. Fatykhov (currently Bashkir State Pedagogical University Professor) et al.
 
Students of the Department are employed by research institutes of oil and gas companies, Academies of Sciences and manufacturing enterprises.
There is an annual practice of defending yearly and diploma projects, as well as Master’s dissertations, in foreign languages (English and German) at the Department of Applied Physics.
