The Department of German Philology was established in 1938 after the opening of the Ufa Teachers' Institute of Foreign Languages. The department was headed by R.V. Koh, E.A. Fee, G.N. Klassen , R.Z. Muryasov, R.G. Gataullin.  At different times P.P. Kaspransky (in the field of the theory of the practice of phonetics of the German language), Ph.D., professors A.N. Antyshev, A.P Mayorov , as well as Cand. of Sciences P.P Asfandiyarov , R.I. Vinogradova , Ya.P. Gelblu, E.I. Gutrova,  A.B. Koshlyak, A.S. Nikishin, M.P. Petrov worked at the department of German philology  . The formation of the Department of German philology coincides with the 70's. It was at this time that the department became a scientific school on word formation, just then in the capital universities they started talking about a new direction of linguistic research. Since that time, the development of the problems of word formation of the German language has become the main direction of the scientific activity of the department. The department of French philology was opened in 1969, the department was headed by associate professors O.V.Timofeeva , M.S. Sukhareva, T.P. Nekhoroshkova, T.F. Karimova, F.S Kudryasheva. The main directions of the scientific activity of the department were the study of the text in grammatical, lexical, phonetic, linguoculturological and gender aspects, and also within the framework of the theory of translation.

The Department of German and French Philology was established in September 2015 by combining the Department of German Philology and the Department of French Philology and the Second Foreign Language. There are 6 professors at the department: R.A. Gazizov , R.G.Gataullin, R.Z. Muryasov, L.K. Mazunova, O.I. Tayupova, L.A. Fatykhova,  10 associate professors and 4 senior teachers. The department provides language, methodological and linguistic training of students in German and French in the bachelor's program. At the department there are lecture courses on theoretical grammar and phonetics, on lexicology, stylistics and history of language, on theory and practice of translation, on culture, history and economy of the countries of studied languages, as well as special courses on the problems of modern linguistics: the relationship between word formation and grammar; grammatical categories and word formation, the problems of neology, stylistic aspects of word formation, the stylistic foundation of languages, word formation and proper names, topical issues of onomastics, methods of linguistic analysis, problems of text research, etc.

The main tasks, which are considered at classes of language practice are the following: to teach students consequently, logically, informatively, substantially in

accordance with language norms to state own thoughts on a certain program of colloquial topic in a normal speed. The specificity of the lesson’s work on language practice is an active use of listening activities, reading texts as auxiliary means to improve foreign speech, that is, for sure, do not except their social value. One of the important programs in the educational work of the department is an analysis of literary texts by classic and modern authors. Special courses on the sense and methods of literary text analysis were developed.

The department works on development of methods and ways of teaching separate aspects. Classes on language practice are created to help students to get skills of colloquial speech, to develop skills of fluent discussion and writing. On the 1st courses the proportion of classroom work on language is very high but on further courses the proportion of self work increases rapidly. Educational programs and guidance materials reflect the specificity in organization of educational process. There are working programs on separate disciplines, developed schedule of students’ self work with a glance to weekly work. Guidance papers on separate pieces of work that all teachers have are used in home reading. Systematic maintenance of lecture courses content is provided on the basis of advances in science of language. The department develops recommended practices and notes on computer for the most difficult topic of lecture courses. Taking into account that problematic statement of material is the main form of activation of students’ cognitive work on lectures; the department tends to make better use of that method of statement. Poster tables and diagrams, completing and showing stated ideas and strategies are used at  the lessons and lectures. Widely used technique means of education, demonstrating educational and art movies in German and French languages. The most important role is dedicated to   writing term papers and graduation works.  Their content reflects the awareness level of student on a certain language and its’ theoretic aspects. There are such research areas as word formation, phraseology, onomatology, cultural linguistics, knowledge engineering, translation problems, text as an object of grammar research, etc.

The master’s program "Romano-Germanic philology. Typology of genetic related and unrelated languages" accepts 10 students annually.

Within the framework of the departmental themes "Problems of word-formational, grammatical, lexical, stylistic semantics and style", "Text as an object of linguistic research" and "Foreign language education and dialogue of cultures", the department studies the interaction of word formation with the categories of grammar, vocabulary, text and methodological problems and is a recognized regional center of research on modern German word formation. In addition, the department pays great attention to the comparative study of German, French, Russian, English, Сhinese, Bashkir and Tatar languages. Most of the candidate's dissertations were defended on these topics. Individual teachers study such questions as theory of word formation and grammar problems, word formation and toponymy, problems of functional stylistics and linguistics of the text, communicative factors of the use of separate cases in the text, theory of translation and practice, cultural studies, culturological and linguistic aspects of time in different cultures, the development of graphic and spelling norms of the German language. A lot of monographs, collections of scientific works, manuals and dozens of scientific articles are published on the subject of research.

The department annually conducts «  The Week of the German Language» and a scientific and practical conference on the theory and practice of teaching the German language and publishes the materials of the conference.

The Department has postgraduate education in the specialties 10.12.04 – "Germanic languages", 10.02.19 – "Theory of language", as well as the methodology of foreign languages teaching. Scientific supervisors are doctors of philological sciences, professors Gazizov R.A., Gataullin R.G., Murasov R.Z., Tayupova O.I., Mazunova L.K.

The Department has The Center for International Examinations in German TestDaF and TestAS, as well as The Center for International Examinations in French DELF and DALF.
