Bashkir State University is the oldest university in the Republic of Bashkortostan. Its origin is traced back to 1909 when Ufa Teacher Training Institute became the first higher educational establishment in Bashkortostan. Since 1957 the university has had its status of Bashkir State University.

Today BashSU is the largest educational, scientific and cultural center of the Republic of Bashkortostan. It incorporates 15 faculties and 4 branches (Sterlitamak, Sibai, Birsk and Neftekamsk), more than 145 academic departments and over 100 schools and scientific laboratories. Tuition is provided in more than 150 majors and areas, including the second stage of higher education, i.e. MA courses (the details are available in the Rules of Admission for International Students above). 

Bashkir State University is a large center for postgraduate studies which provides postgraduate courses in 56 scientific majors and doctoral courses in 8 scientific majors. Each year more than 500 postgraduate and doctoral students study here, which accounts for one third of postgraduate and doctoral students of Bashkortostan. 9 dissertation commitees are responsible for defense and awarding academic degrees in 23 majors.

The total number of students is over 33,000 including more than 350 international students from 23 countries. Teaching staff is about 2,000 including 183 doctors and 489 candidates of science.

BashSU is an active participant in international activities in education, science and culture. In July 2015 Bashkir State University hosted BRICS Youth Summit assembling youth leaders from the five BRICS countries.

More than 56 association agreements have been signed with universities of 15 countries. Within these agreements students and postgraduates of BashSU take part in exchange programs with partner universities. Students are offered exchange programs with partner-universities in China (Liaoning University (Shenyang), Nanchang University (Nanchang), East China Jiaotong University (Nanchang), France (The University of Cergy-Pontoise (Paris), Germany (Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg (Halle-Wittenberg) and South Korea (Pai Chai University (Taejon).

The Faculty of Philology offers a unique 1-year Russian Language and Culture Program for foreign exchange students from partner-universities learning the Russian language in the Foreign Language Schools. The Centre of Russian as a Foreign Language provides preparatory courses of the Russian Language for foreign students who enter Bachelor and Master programs, the majority of courses in BashSU being taught in Russian.

Within the Visiting Professors Program Bashkir State University invites foreign teachers and instructors to give lectures. Languages are taught by native-speaking teachers from France, Germany, China, Bulgaria, Iran, Turkey and Korea. Bashkir State University is visited by foreign diplomats from France, Germany, Iran, China, Turkey, USA, Morocco, Korea, Uzbekistan etc.

BashSU hosts various international events such as The Russian Philosophy Congres, Weeks of the German language, International Research Conference of Slavic Languages and Cultures, International Conference of History, Uniting Countries.

It can boast world-class leboratories such as Centre of Micro- and Nanoscale Dynamics of Dispersed Systems. Each year it invites distinguished professors such as Prof. Werner Lauterborn (the University of Goettingen, Germany), Prof. Prashanta Dutta (Washington State University, USA), Prof. An Tuan Tran and Dr. Silvestre Roberto Gonzalez Avila (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore), Prof. Ramani Dyuraisvami (the University of Maryland, USA).
