Historical background

The philological education in Bashkortostan dates back to 1920 when philological department was founded as a part of the Ufa Institute of Public Education (which afterwards was named A. K. Timeryazev Bashkir State Pedagogical Institute and since 1957 – Bashkir State University) of which a separate Department of Bashkir Philology and Journalism was formed.
 
In former times Zaytsev Yakov Vasilyevich, Kisselgof Iosif Sergeyevich, Sirayev Zarif Islamovich held the post of a dean in the Historical and Philological Department.
 
Gutman David Semyonovich, Zaynullin Marat Valiyevich, Proshkin Valeryan Georgiyevich, Karabanov Radiy Alekseyevich were the deans of the Philological Department.
 
Zaynullin Marat Valiyevich became the dean of the new Department of Bashkir Philology and Journalism. In the period from 1991 to 2000 the department was headed by Kunafin Ghinyat Safiullovich. From 2000 to 2010 the department has been directed by Zaynullin Marat Valiyevich. From December 2010 the department is headed by Mukhtarullina Aigul Raisovna
 
Nowadays the department is the main educational foundation for training well-qualified experts in educational and cultural institutions in Bashkortostan and in a number of regions of Russia.
 
A considerable experience and abundance of traditions gained during a long period of educational and research activity allowed the chairs of the department to develop a scientific school on Bashkir Philology. One of the founders of that school is N.K. Dmitriev – the Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences in the USSR, Academician of the Applied Sciences Academy, Prof. Dj.G. Kiekbayev – the author of the first science-based grammar of the Bashkir language, a notable representative of Ural-Altay studies, A.N. Kireyev – a prominent folklore researcher and A. I. Kharisov, an expert in literature. A major contribution to the development of science and education in Bashkortostan was made by their disciples, the academicians of the International Turkic Academy R. N. Baimov, M.V. Zaynullin, G.S. Kunafin, the Corresponding Members of the Academy of Sciences of Bashkortostan G.G. Saitbattalov, I.G. Galutdinov, professors M.Kh. Ahtyamov, N.Kh. Ishboulatov, E.F. Ishberdin, M.Kh.Idelbayev etc.
 
The first graduation was in early thirties of the 20-th century. The majority of writers, poets, playwrights, experts in literature or language in the Republic of Bashkortostan are the gradates of our department. The department takes a legitimate pride in its graduates – the Salavat Yulayev Award winner Kh. Davletshina, Hero of the Soviet Union Zubay Utyagulov. Popular poets and writers are the graduates of our department: M. Karim, R. Bikbay, N. Musin; notable Bashkir writers such as K. Mergen, F.Isangulov, Kh. Gilyazhev, R.Sultangareyev, A. Vakhitov, Z. Sultanov, R. Baimov, G. Khisamov, R.Kamalov, poets like G. Salyam, M. Khay, Kh. Karim, G.Ramazanov, M, Galy, K.Aralbayev etc. An important role in the development of the Bashkir poetry is played by our graduates poetesses F. Tuguzbayeva, G. Yunusova, G. Kutuyeva, T. Davletberdina, G.Yakupova, D.Talkhina, Z. Khannanova, A.Garifullina, L. Abdullina etc.
 
Four Academicians  of the Academy of Sciences in the Republic of Bashkortostan (G.B.Khousainov, Z.G.Uraksin, F.S.Fayzullin, M.V.Zaynullin) got their higher education here.
 
A notable contribution to the development of mass communication media in our republic was made by our graduates M. Kutlugallyamov, R. Hajiev, S. Badretdinov etc.
 
Many of our graduates became talented experts in literature and folklore later on: A. Kharisov, G.Khusainov, R.Baimov, G.Kunafin, A.Suleymanov, T.Kilmukhametov, M.Idelbayev etc.
 
We are proud of thousands of progressive-minded teachers, honoured public education workers of Bashkortostan and Russia and linguists: the chancellor of Ufa State Academy of Arts, Prof. I.S. Galautdinov, I.A. Sharapov, Z.Sh. Yaparova, F.A.Itbayeva, G.S.Kujina, Z.Z.Kalmurzina, S.G.Mukhtarullina, F.G.Suleymanova etc.
 
Prominent workers in the sphere of the Bashkir theatrical and music arts graduated from the philological department at different times: Farit Shayhutdinov, Farit Bikbulatov, Rif Gabitov, Azat Aitkulov, Ilsyar Gizetdinova, Rezeda Amineva as well as our staesmen and public figures Mansur Ayupov, Rashida Sultanova, Talgat Sagitov, Nurislam Murzabayev, Fayzulla Shaikhislamov, Farit Gabitov, Rif Zaripov, Farit Usmanov etc.
 
Among gradutes of our department there are prominent cultural and art workers: F. Bikbulatov, A.Aitkulov, V.Ilimbetov, R. Gabitov, R.Rahimov, I.Gizetdinova, F.Valiakhmetov, R.Amineva, F.Shayhutdinov etc.
 
The proud of our university are the graduates of the Department of Bashkir Philology and Journalism Gulnaz Kulsarina, Fanur Yagafarov, Ramis Davletbayev, Venera Sitdikova, Zilya Sagadeeva (Baskortostan State Television Channel), Artur Davletbakov («Yeshlek» newspaper editor-in-chief) etc.
 
All these favour the gain of the authority of the Department of Bashkir Philology and Journalism both within the republic and beyond its borders. Year by year the number of people willing to enter the department grows, among them are people from our republic and both from the neighbouring regions like Orenburg, Chelyabinsk, Samara, Perm, Kurgan, Tymen, Saratow and other parts of Russia.
