The Bashkir State University Department of Bioorganic Chemistry was formed on January 18, 2001. The backbone of the Department consisted of young staff from the Bashkir State University Department of Organic Chemistry, including Head of Department R.F. Talipov and Associate Professors G.R. Talipova, I.V. Vakulin and I.S. Shepelevich. To a certain extent it was a legal successor to the Department of Natural Compound Chemistry organized at Institute of Organic Chemistry of Ufa Scientific Centre of Russian Academy of Sciences. Thus, the Department of Bioorganic Chemistry has been closely related to Institute of Organic Chemistry of Ufa Scientific Centre of Russian Academy of Sciences almost since its establishment.
 
At the moment the professorial and teaching staff of the Department of Bioorganic Chemistry consists of 3 professors and 4 associate professors who train professionals in the area of theoretical and applied organic and bioorganic chemistry.
 
Currently the Department is engaged in theoretical and experimental research of biologically active compounds (R.F. Talipov). Within this framework the Department has been active in the following areas of research: quantum and chemical research of organic reaction mechanisms, intermolecular interaction, and reactivity of bioorganic and metalorganic compounds (I.V. Vakulin); theoretical and practical research of ethylene reactions involving electrophilic reagents – studying the influence of solvent and salt effects on the selectivity of Prins reaction product formation, transformation of lupan and olean triterpenoids caused by Prins reaction, studying ethylene aminomethylation under the conditions of Prince and Mannich reactions (I.S. Shepelevich); synthesis of biologically active derivatives of 3-hydroxytetrahydrofuran (G.R. Talipova); development and introduction of new environmentally-friendly and effective agricultural preparations (I.V. Vakulin, I.S. Shepelevich, G.R. Talipova).
 
Applied research is being carried out, in particular studying functionalisation of olefinic and dienic oligomers by compounds containing O, N and S (R.Z. Biglova); expansion of synthetic potential of optically pure (R)-4-mentenon monoterpenoid (E.R. Latypova).

The Department is also responsible for teaching General Chemistry, Food Chemistry and Physical and Chemical Methods of Analysis to Bashkir Academy of Comprehensive Business Safety and Security students majoring in Quality Management and Standardisation and Certification.
 
In order to train highly qualified professionals in the area of bioorganic chemistry the Department also attracts leading scientists from Institute of Organic Chemistry of Ufa Scientific Centre of Russian Academy of Sciences, who have mastered modern information technologies, physical, quantum and chemical methods of bioorganic compound research, theory of molecular design of drugs and natural compounds: Member of Russian Academy of Sciences M.S. Yunusov, Member of Academy of Sciences of Republic of Bashkortostan I.B. Abdrakhmanov, Corresponding Member of Academy of Sciences of Republic of Bashkortostan M.S. Miftakhov.
