The Faculty of Mathematics and Information Technology is one of the oldest BSU departments. It was established in 1972 as a result of setting up two divisions of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics: mathematical and physical ones. About 80 teachers presently work at the Faculty, including 74 staff members with academic degrees, 21 professors, 2 corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences (M.A. Ilgamov, V.V. Napalkov). Many staff members have been awarded the degrees of Honoured Science and Education Workers of the Russian Federation and Bashkortostan.
The Faculty of Mathematics and Information Technology occupies a separate floor of the BSU Physical and Mathematical Department building. It comprises 14 study rooms, 5 computer rooms, Chair and Dean’s offices, and a reading hall on the second floor of the building. All the Faculty computers are connected to the local network and have access to the Internet.
The Faculty has both doctoral candidacy and postgraduate courses. The academic degrees are conferred by its own Academic Council.
The specialities and terms of study
The Faculty of Mathematics and Information Technology carries out a complete educational cycle training Bachelors and Masters of Science, diplomaed specialists, postgraduates and candidates for a Doctor’s degree. One of the basic principles of classical education employed at the Faculty is the realization of a multipurpose training strategy.
The Faculty of Mathematics has a 5year study course in the specialities:
010100 – Mathematics with the qualification “Mathematician”,
010500 – Applied Mathematics and Computer Science with the qualifications “Mathematician. System programmer”.
After the second year a student chooses one of the 9 Faculty Chairs. Each student also has an opportunity to specialize in additional courses according to an individual plan.
The Faculty trains Bachelors (4 years) and Masters of Science (2 years) in the spheres of mathematics, applied mathematics, and computer science with respective degrees conferred.
The Masters are trained in 2 types of curricula: “Ordinary Differential Equations” and “Mathematical Modelling”. The Masters’ course is meant for Bachelors showing good educational and scientific progress. It presupposes advanced fundamental studies in the chosen speciality.
Diplomaed specialists, Bachelors and Masters of Science can continue their education as postgraduates.
The basic research fields:
The Faculty research work involves a wide sphere of mathematical problems and their applications to Physics, Biology, Economics, Petrochemistry, and Ecology. The Faculty staff actively participates in the scientific support of educational reforms, for instance, in developing the system of the Unified State Exams.
The teachers of the Faculty collaborate with their colleagues from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, from the US and Germany, France, and Canada.

The students of the Faculty participate in allRussian, regional and University conferences; many are coauthors of scientific articles. Every year the Faculty organizes a research conference funded by state grants for students, postgraduates, and young scientists. International conferences held by the Russian Research Fund and Scientific and Teaching Innovation Centre have been conducted twice.
Graduates’ job placement
The Faculty of Mathematics trains specialists in research fields involving mathematical methods and computer technology, solving various tasks with the help of mathematical modelling of processes, objects, and software, developing effective methods of solving the tasks in physics, engineering, economics, and management, in design, survey, and operation works, in teaching mathematical disciplines.
The Faculty has direct links with Ufa Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, with the Institute of Petrochemistry and Catalysis, with the enterprise “Salavatnefteorgsintez” and some others. Its graduates work at different industrial enterprises including overseas ones (in the USA, Canada, France, Great Britain, Germany, Italy etc.)
