The educational process is organized by the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Philosophy and Sociology in accordance with standard documents of the Federal Education Agency, the Bashkir State University Articles of Association, decisions of the University Council and the Council of the Faculty of Philosophy and Sociology.
 
The organization of the educational process at the Faculty is regulated by the working academic plan for majors, the calendar academic schedule and the classes schedule for each form of tuition.
 
The academic year for full-time students starts on September 1 and ends according to the working academic plan of corresponding majors.
 
Academic classes at our Faculty are held in BashSU Main Building rooms. They start at 8.30 a.m. and end at 8.30 p.m.
 
In each group the Faculty Dean appoints the monitor who is chosen from most advanced, active, responsible and disciplined students. The group monitor reports immediately to the Faculty Dean and makes sure that all his orders and instructions are executed. The group monitor interacts immediately with the Dean’s Office Methodologist who is responsible for the corresponding year of studies or academic group, form of tuition and Deputy Deans and does their assignments. The monitor’s instructions within the scope of the above-mentioned functions are obligatory to follow for every student in the group. In each group record of attendance and performance of students of the established form of tuition is made in a special journal that is kept at the Faculty. The Deputy Dean for Academic Work holds regular meetings with group monitors.

The Faculty of Philosophy and Sociology trains highly qualified specialists in 5 majors: Philosophy, Sociology, Social Work, Political Science, Public Relations.

The educational process in the major of Philosophy is provided for by qualified teachers – Doctors and Candidates of Philosophy reading their own courses of: History of Philosophy; Social Philosophy; Ontology and Theory of Cognition; Logics; Theory and Practice of Argumentation; Philosophical Anthropology; Ethics; Aesthetics; Philosophy and Methodology of Science; Philosophy of Culture; Philosophy of Religion; Political Science; Sociology. A student who has chosen this major can specialize in one of the two areas of their choice starting with the 3rd year:
  • Ontology and Theory of Cognition;
  • Social Philosophy.
 BashSU runs postgraduate and doctoral courses in the majors of Ontology and Theory of Cognition and Social Philosophy, there is a council for defence of candidate and doctoral dissertations.
 
Ontology and Theory of Cognition
 
In modern philosophy, as well as in other fields of knowledge, there are chapters that are distinguished for their fundamentality and without mastering which no philosopher can do no matter what kind of intraphilosophical subject they may major in. From the standpoint of logics the most fundamental chapter of philosophy is the one called Ontology and Theory of Cognition.
 
Ontology is a discipline dealing with general objective reality and its typical forms, theory of cognition is a discipline dealing with what and how can be cognized and with how objective reality is cognised. The subject matter of this chapter is linked to other fields of knowledge. The University alumni who have graduated from the Faculty with the major of Philosophy may feel confident not only as philosophers, but as broadly and deeply thinking scholars who are capable of applying their knowledge in various spheres of activity and of combining creative inspiration with professional knowledge and skills.
 
Professors of different University departments teach students majoring in Ontology and Theory of Cognition. The syllabus includes profound studies of philosophical disciplines, logics, ancient languages such as Latin and Greek, as well as Arabic and other languages, mathematics and information technologies, natural science, history and theory of culture, etc.
 
Social Philosophy
 
Social philosophy is one of the scholarly disciplines studying society in its different aspects and manifestations. Its subject matter includes most general issues related to social life.
 
The aspiration of social philosophy is not only to give a general view of social life, but to find the purport of existence of social institutes and society per se.
  • Within the framework of social philosophy one of the most important problems is that of relationship between an individual and society.
  • Social philosophy dwells upon causes for emerging of social life, i.e. it studies condition under which society can keep its integrity.
  • In the field of social philosophy methods of scientific cognition of social life are given meaning and social sciences experience is summarized.
Sociology
 
This major is relatively new to Bashkir State University. In 1991 the first evening-course students were admitted, and the first full-time students were admitted in 1992.
 
Sociologists are trained at two departments – the Department of Applied and Specialised Sociology (headed by Doctor of Sociology, Professor F.B. Burkhanova) and the Department of Theory and History of Sociology (headed by Doctor of Sociology, Professor R.B. Shaikhislamov).
 
The training is done according to programs for bachelors, specialists with 5-year higher education and masters. There are two forms of tuition: full-time and extramural. The tuition is carried out on state budget and commercial bases.
 
The training is done in three majors: General Sociology, Economic Sociology, Sociology of Management.
 
The syllabus has been devised on the basis of analogous syllabuses of the largest universities in the country – Moscow and St. Petersburg Universities. The program provides for fundamental and applied sociological training. It also contains an extensive bloc of general and humanist disciplines with a view to training all-round graduates who will combine profound professional skills with extensive university scholarship. Much attention is paid to studying foreign languages.
 
The sociologists are being more and more extensively trained in mathematics and information technologies, students master skills of operating modern computers, processing and analysis of sociological data, programming their own applications.
 
The educational process in the major of Sociology is provided for by qualified specialists – Doctors and Candidates of Sciences reading their own courses in: General Theory of Sociology, History of Sociology, Methods and Procedures of Sociological Research, Modern Sociological Theories, Introduction to Research, Sociology of Family, Sociology of Public Opinion, Sociology of Communications, Political Sociology, Economic Sociology, Ethnosociology, etc. Within the framework of these disciplines students obtain special knowledge in the field of: theory and history of sociology, method sand procedures of sociological research, teaching sociological disciplines, sociology of communications and public opinion, etc.
 
On graduating students get: Bachelor Diplomas, Diplomas of Higher Education, Master Diplomas. The University runs postgraduate courses and there are councils for defence of candidate and doctoral dissertations in Sociology. Those students who show interest in scholarly work during their studies may go on with their sociological training as postgraduates and degree-seekers.
 
Social Work
 
In Bashkir State University the major of Social Work is one of the youngest and most promising. The first students of this major were admitted in 1994. Social work specialists are trained in accordance with academic programs complying with Russian and international standards.
 
The training in the major of Social Work may be full-time and extramural on state budget and commercial bases.
 
Students have an opportunity to study social work issues profoundly within the specialization areas of:
  • social and legal protection of children, family, youth;
  • technology and management of social work.
The graduates are given qualifications of Social Work Specialist. Externship form of tuition is available. The Departments run postgraduate and doctoral courses.
 
The educational process in the major of Social Work is provided for by highly qualified teachers – Doctors and Candidates of Sciences. Apart from studying special disciplines related to social work which are:
  • History, Theory, Technology and Management of Social Work;
  • Forecasting, Designing and Simulation in Social Work;
  • Family Studies;
  • Introduction to Social Medicine;
  • Theory of Communication;
  • etc.
students obtain fundamental knowledge in such scholarly disciplines as History, Economic Theory, Political Science, Philosophy, Pedagogy, Ethics, Aesthetics, etc. Particular emphasis is laid on studying such social work related fields of scholarly knowledge as Sociology, Law, Psychology, Management. Students receive good computer training. Close attention is paid to studying foreign languages.
 
Students majoring in Social Work are actively engaged in research, take part in conferences, student work competitions, analyse social problems in the process of practical training.
 
Political Science
is the youngest major in Bashkir State University. This is a 21st century major. In 2001 the first students of this major were admitted and the first postgraduates were admitted in 1991. Highly qualified political scientists, as well as Candidates of Political Sciences, are trained at the Department of Political Science. The Department is headed by Doctor of History, Professor Yu.N. Nikiforov.
 
The training in the major of Political Science is done full-time on a commercial basis. The term of tuition is 5 years. The students specialise in Political Science and receive the qualifications of Political Scientist.
 
Students of this major are trained according to academic programs complying with Russian and international standards.
 
The educational process in the major of Political Science is provided for by qualified teachers – Doctors and Candidates of Sciences reading their own courses in: History of Political Doctrines, Theory of Politics, Comparative Political Science, Political Philosophy, Political Sociology, Political Psychology, World Politics and International Relations, Political Analysis and Forecasting, Political Management, Political Technologies, Political Conflictology, Ethnopolitical Science, State Policy and Management, etc.
 
Students who are interested in research may go on with their education at postgraduate and doctoral courses, as well as become degree-seekers.
 
Public Relations
 
Public Relations is an integral part of modern management aimed at creating an atmosphere of trust and mutual understanding between partners and at boosting the efficiency of their information interaction. This profession is turning into one of the leading and most demanded jobs in modern “information” society.
 
Students of this major are trained in accordance with academic programs complying with Russian and international standards.
 
The training is done on a contractual (commercial) basis. The term of tuition is 5 years.
 
A public relations specialist is a professional in the field of information activities who combines general erudition with specific knowledge in the sphere of organizing and spreading social information, is able to single out the most urgent problems and “build bridges” of mutual understanding between the general public and a specific social group.
 
A PR professional is capable of functioning as a press secretary, manager, assistant, expert and adviser on issues of developing and introducing information technologies, of business communication and public connections.
 
The educational process in the major of Public Relations is provided for by qualified teachers – Doctors and Candidates of Sciences reading their own courses in: Theory and Practice of Public Relations, Contemporary Russian and Speech Standards, Stylistics and Literary Editing, Logics and Theory of Argumentation, Theory and Practice of Mass Information, Introduction to Theory of Communication, Sociology and Psychology of Mass Communication, Advertising in Communication Process, Communication and Management Standards. Within the framework of these disciplines students obtain special knowledge and master special skills in the field of: humanist technologies, social consulting, international economic relations, sociology of mass communication and public opinion.
 
Activities in the field of public relations include:
  • Forming public opinion;
  • Information support for organizational activities;
  • Analysis of socioeconomic problems and providing recommendations for their efficient solution;
  • Creating conditions for development of international business, scientific and cultural cooperation;
  • Advertising and communication management;
  • Shaping positive image of the firm;
  • Marketing research in the field of PR.
During the academic year students of the Faculty of Philosophy and Sociology work on their test, yearly and diploma papers. Masters prepare their dissertations.
 
Successful obtaining of knowledge in disciplines presupposes that student work constantly and systematically at lectures, workshops, when preparing tasks according to the independent work plan, when taking intermediate tests.
 
The syllabus for full-time and extramural students provides for their independent work. Independent study of corresponding topics is necessary for more profound and complete understanding. Independent work should be done irrespective of lectures and workshops. For this purpose one must do all the independent work tasks set out in the corresponding part of the teaching materials. The form of independent work control is decided upon by the teacher in an individual or groupwise manner and may be a paper, a report, an essay, oral quiz, etc.
 
In order to check knowledge tests are used the aim of which is intermediate assessment of academic progress in the material that has been covered. The tests are designed to measure the success achieved by students in learning factual material.

Scientific work
 
The scientific work of the Faculty Departments is done according to the corresponding thematic plans. The results of this work have found reflection in published scientific papers and monographs, articles and theses. The teachers work on doctoral and candidate dissertations.
 
Dissertation councils function on the basis of the Faculty. Candidate’s degrees are awarded in the following majors: 09.00.01 – Ontology and Theory of Cognition, 09.00.11 – Social Philosophy, 22.00.04 – Social Structure, Social Institutes and Processes, 22.00.08 – Sociology of Management.
 
The Faculty provides a great contribution into training highly qualified specialists for state power organs and local government bodies, higher educational institutions and academies of sciences, cultural enlightenment institutions and research organizations, technical schools and colleges of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russian Federation regions and a number of the CIS countries. Only from 2000 to 2010 25 Doctors of Sciences and 160 Candidates of Sciences were trained for the Republic of Bashkortostan and Russian Federation regions. During the past 2010 year 1 doctoral and 14 candidate dissertations were defended at the Faculty.
 
Within the framework of the Faculty international, all-Russian, regional and Republican conferences and exhibitions are organized and held.
 
The Department of Ontology and Theory of Cognition holds theoretical seminars in social philosophy (headed by Professor S.M. Pozdyayeva) where doctoral students, postgraduates and degree-seekers deliver scientific reports (according to a special plan).
 
During the academic year (from October 15 to May 15) weekly lectures are delivered for postgraduates of the department of Philosophy as well as weekly seminars are held related to issues of theoretical and practical research character.
 
With a view to forming a scientific sociological school a constantly functioning methodological seminar of postgraduates and degree-seekers has been created (headed by R.B. Shaikhislamov).
 
Professor A.F. Kudryashev supervises the organisation and holding of the monthly methodological seminar “Knowledge Substantiation Problem” within the framework of the Philosophy Section of the Philosophy Head Council of the Russian Federation Ministry of Education and Science.
 
Professor A.V. Lukyanov supervises the organization and holding of theoretical and methodological seminar for postgraduates and degree-seekers.
 
Associate Professor A.M. Bagautdinov heads the student scientific group “Philosophy and Future Civilisation” organized for BashSU students.
 
Research carried out by students of the faculty of Philosophy and Sociology finds its manifestation in taking part in the Republican and Faculty student scientific work competitions, as well as in conferences and student groups; writing yearly papers and diploma projects. Students take active part in sociological research, in various grants and scholarship holders competitions on different levels.
 
The annual scientific work competition among university students of the Republic of Bashkortostan cannot be imagined without the participation of students of the Faculty of Philosophy and Sociology. Since 2002 our students have been winning first prizes in this competition. Moreover, Faculty students take part in the annual all-Russian competition of student works in theory and practice of Public Relations “Khrustalny Apelsin” (“Crystal Orange”) and the city administration competition “Gorodskaya Sreda” (“Urban Environment”).
 
One of the major indicators of intellectual and creative work done by students is participation in various contests. One should specifically mention the active participation of students majoring in Social Work in all-Russian contests in the field of Social Work. Since 2006 the Faculty of Philosophy and Sociology has been holding Sociological Contests in which students majoring in Sociology take part. Since 2009 the Faculty has been organising student contests in all majors. Students take active part in every event initiated both by the Faculty itself and by city and Republican organizations, which testifies to a high research level at the Faculty.
 
Another indicator characterizing student scientific and intellectual potential is being awarded grants on different levels. Thus, grants by the President of the Republic of Bashkortostan were given to A. Islamova, A. Usmanova (2005), I. Nafikova, A. Zakirzyanov, A. Tsenev (2006). In 2006 Ye. Izilyaeva won a scholarship by the Government of the Republic of Bashkortostan, and in 2007 she won a scholarship by the Government of the Russian Federation. V. Potanin scholarships were given to I. Vakhitov, D. Abrakhmanov, A. Khammatova (2002), A. Zakirzyanov, A. Loshmanov (2005), Ye. Sushkova (2006). In 2007 L. Fazlyeva was honoured with a scholarship by the Bashkir State University Academic Council. In 2009 R. Gumerova and A. Kashapova were honoured with scholarships by the President of the Republic of Bashkortostan. Ye. Izilyaeva, a student majoring in Sociology, won a scholarship by the Government of the Russian Federation in 2009.
 
In 2010 A. Badretdinova and R. Gumerova won scholarships by the President of the Republic and A. Minagulova won a scholarship by the BashSU Academic Council.
At the Faculty there is a student scientific group called Humanist, at whose sessions students of different years of studies majoring in Social Work deliver reports on urgent issues of social work.
 
In 2006 a scientific club Socrates was created in order to bring together professional and teaching staff and students to discuss general issues of the Department, to provide for continuity and exchange of experience.
  
Since 2008 a scientific association of students majoring in Public Relations called “Nauka PRO” has been functioning.
 
Within the framework of the Faculty annual Republican scientific conferences of students, postgraduates and young scientists are organized.
