Department
of Bashkir philology and journalism was created in 1990. In short
time it became a many-sided subdivision of the Bashkir State
University, a comfortable standard to the classical institution
of higher education system. There are over 900 students at the
department who get full-time education and part-time education.
In addition to the basic specialties "The Bashkir language
and literature", "The Bashkir language and literature,
the Russian language and literature", "Journalism"
(Bashkir, Russian and Tatar groups) new specialists and
specialization's "The Bashkir language and literature, the
English language", "The Bashkir language and
literature, the German language", "The Bashkir language
and literature, the Arabic language", "The Bashkir
language and literature, the Persian language", "The
Bashkir language and literature, the Turkish language",
"The Bashkir language and literature, library science",
"The Bashkir language and literature, psychology",
"The Bashkir language and literature, literary critique and
editing", "The Bashkir language and literature,
translation" were opened. There is a post-graduate course
and a doctorate course on Turkey languages and literatures of
Russia's folks, a specialized council on defense of doctoral and
candidate thesis's functioning successfully at the department.
Scientific and scientific- practical conferences, symposia on
problems of turkology, the Bashkir and Russian philology and
journalism, traditional conferences of students, post graduates
and young teachers, international Validov readings are regularly
held at the faculty. Exchange of scientific and pedagogical
experience with colleagues from abroad is also being widely
practiced. Our teachers and students undergo practical training
or continue their study at universities of Turkey, Egypt,
Hungary, Germany and Iran; specialists from United States of
America, Turkey, Germany, Belgium and Finland give lessons at
different courses of the department. From 1994 20 foreign
students study here. On the level of training,scientific,
training- methodical and educational work the faculty is always
one of the first three winners among fourteen departments of the
Bashkir State University and one of the first ten winners among
analogous departments of Russia. High scientific pedagogical
level of the department is confirmed by the fact that four of 53
teachers are academicians of International Turkey and Russian
Academy of Humanities, three of them are corresponding members of
Bashkortostan's Academy of Sciences, 13 of them have got the
degree of Doctor, 23 are candidates of science, 9 teachers are
members of Writers Union, 10 teachers are awarded honorary titles
of Russia and Bashkortostan and two are awarded the State Salavat
Yulaev Prize of Bashkortostan.
All this favors the growth of the Bashkir philology and journalism department's authority in our republic and beyond its limits. As a matter of fact it has become the republic's leading center on training scientific, pedagogical and creative cadres for the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russian Federation and foreign countries.
From the moment of its formation the department of Bashkir philology and journalism is headed by Giniyatulla Safiullovich Kunafin, Doctor of Philological Science, Professor and Academician of International Turkey Academy.

G.S. is a specialist on pre-Revolutionary Bashkir literature, the
author of over 200 scientific works including the monographs
"Bashkir Educationists - Democrats of the 19th century"
(M., 1981, the co-author A.Vildanov), "Educationist and
Writer M.Umetbaev" (1991), "Culture of Bashkortostan
and Bashkir Literature in the 19th Century" (1992),
"Bashkir Satirical Poetry in the 19th and Beginning of the
20th Century" (1996), "Bashkir Literary Poetry of Songs
in the 19th - Beginning of the 20th Century" (1997),
"With Song and Satire: Genre System's Development of Bashkir
Literary Poetry of Songs and Satirical Poetry in the 19th and
Beginning of the 20th Century" (1999). He is also the author
of teaching aids for the philology department's
students "Bashkir Literature in the First Half of the 19th Century" (1988), "Bashkir Literature in the Second Half of the 19th Century" (1992), methodical textbook for teachers "Studying Bashkir Literature in the 9th Form" (1991, the co-author R.Iskandarov). Kunafin G.S. is one of the leading authors of the six-volumes textbook "History of Bashkir Literature" (1990-1996), "Brief Encyclopaedia of Bashkortostan" and textbooks for schools and higher education institutions "History of Bashkortostan From Ancient Times till 1917" (!991), "Bashkir Literature for the 8th Form" (1986) and "Bashkir Literature for the 9th Form" (1998). He elaborated and edited the works of Shamsetdin Zaki, a Bashkir poet of the first half of the 19th century, and an outstanding educationist M.Umetbaev ("Yadkar" - "Memoranda", 1984).
Kunafin G.S. has the honorary title of Honored Worker of Popular Education of Bashkortostan, he is awarded Honorary Diplomas by Ministry of Education, State Committee of Science, Higher and Secondary Education, Ministry of Press and Mass Media and breastplate by State Committee of Popular Education of the USSR "For Excellent Successes in Work".
